Work is now well underway for the streetscape project in downtown Abbeville.

The beautification project that will improve sidewalks, add multiple handicap accessibility points and make other improvements is being largely funded by a $450,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

Workers pour cement to create a handicap accessible sidewalk by Blacks located in downtown Abbeville.

“The contractor is continuing steady progress at the intersection of Main Street and Pere Megret Street which is the first area in construction in the Streetscape grant project,” Councilman Brady Broussard Jr. said.

Workers with the city’s electrical department can also be seen now in that area for their role which will bring utilities underground.

“The corner now being worked on for handicap accessibility may appear large to some,” Broussard said. “The size is according to plan and compliant with ADA slope ratio for safety. The crew doing the work has been courteous and professional thus far.

“It’s been nice to see motorists who are cautious in that area.”

Glenn Lege Construction is handling the work. Completion is expected to be completed around October, weather permitting.

“The mild weather we have been experiencing has allowed the work to proceed steadily,” Broussard said. “Glen Lege Construction has proved their experience in this type of work will make the process easier for our citizens and businesses.”
